World’s Most Dangerous Vacations

Are you an adrenaline junkie? Would you like to spend your upcoming vacation somewhere absolutely dangerous? Do you want your vacation souvenirs to include scars, stitched wounds and a fresh pint of your blood? Well, if you are in search of any of this, the following list of the world’s 7 most dangerous vacations may appeal to you. But before heading out on any of these adventures, make sure your will is written (by the way, a one way ticket rather than round trip might be a great idea as well). In no particular order:

1) Ice climbing

If you are into extreme sports you may want to consider one of the coldest and most dangerous experiences – ice climbing, where falling seracs, soft ice, the threat of avalanches, high elevation and gravity have all plotted against you. All ice can be dangerous, however, while sections ranged at W12 (60 degree consistent ice) can be easily climbed by employing a good technique, sections ranged at W16 and up are vertical or overhanging for the entire pitch and they are usually beyond reach, except for certain rare days of triple high biorhythm and extremely favorable planetary alignments. Some of the most popular spots for ice climbing are Valdez (Alaska), June Lake & Lee Vining (California), Cody and Tetons (Wyoming), Box Canyon (Colorado), and Glymsgil & Múlafjall (Iceland).

2) Running with the Bulls

If you want to experience the rush of possibly being knocked down, stepped on, gored, fracturing some ribs, or sustaining a couple of concussions courtesy of a 900 kg. (2000 pound) bull, the centuries-old celebration of Saint Fermin in Pamplona, Spain is calling for you. This annual festival includes the tradition of running with the bulls and is definitely one of the “must-visit” events for all adrenaline junkies.

3) Rodeo Riding

For guys who want to feel like cowboys of the American West and who are not afraid of being gored, stomped or even plopped upon by the animal, rodeo is the whiplash-inducing thrill they seek. There is no greater adrenaline rush than riding a 6,000 to 8,000 pound bull of pure muscle that tries to break every bone in your body and re-arrange your face. Today there are six standard rodeo events for the toughest men to try: bareback bronc riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, steer wrestling (bull dogging), and calf roping. Rodeo is particularly popular today within the Canadian province of Alberta and throughout the western United States. Wyoming is considered by many to be the capital of the rodeo world.

4) Biking the El Camino de la Muerte

Travel high into the Andes to a road that has more deaths per mile than any other byway in the world. Not only is the road extremely steep and bumpy, but it is also narrow and muddy with steep drops of over 1000 meters instead of margins. The road is unprotected, making near death an almost constant travel companion for cyclists - an ideal recipe for disaster! Disasters often occur - and that is why the road got it’s name - the El Camino de la Muerte, or the Death Road. It’s located between La Paz and Coroico in Bolivia.

5) Wild Safari

Thrillseekers should definitely experience wildlife in Africa. We don’t mean those plush safari companies that cater to old ladies and children; we mean sketchy safaris led by local guides who will take you out into the wild and make you pray for safety and sweat with fear. There are plenty of dangerous animals to stalk including lion, hippopotamus, hyena, crocodile, cheetah, African wild dog and leopard. Some of the best safaris are in Kenya, Namibia, South Africa and Tanzania.

6) Whitewater rafting with crocodiles

Rafting and kayaking amongst the hippos and crocodiles of the upper Zambezi above Victoria Falls in Africa is a sheer adrenaline rush. People can and do get injured when rafting on fast rapids, but whitewater rafting is also a challenging way of testing your strength, endurance, reflex time and ability to think on your feet. Why not push your courage to the limits and try rafting near one of the largest falls on earth?

7) Racing the Baja 1000

Sure Racing the Baja 1000 is dangerous and expensive, but who cares? Racing the Baja can be the greatest adventure of a lifetime, or a nightmare that you’ll spend the rest of your life trying to forget. Baja 1000 is an off-road desert race which includes various types of vehicle classes. It takes place on Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula every fall.
